Abstract

To investigate the response on product formation to variation of iron concentration, this study was conducted in mesophilic batch experiments. Hydrogen production rate increased with increasing iron concentrations and finally became maximal at concentration above 400 mg/l iron (as FeCl©ü). However, the acetate production rate was decreased with increase of iron concentration. The maximal production rate of butyrate, ethanol and butanol was 200, 200 and 400 mg/l iron, respectively. Above 200 mg/l iron production rate of propionate, i-butyrate and valerate were higher than that of below 200 mg/l iron. Propanol production rate was low through this study. The cell concentration was increased with the iron concentrations of medium, but above 3000 mg/l iron biomass was not dependent on initial iron concentration.
